The sixth edition of Florida's furry arts and entertainment convention will be held March 2-4, 2007, at the Wyndham Jacksonville Riverfront, in Jacksonville, Florida. Room rates will be $99 single/double, plus tax and fees.
As we just signed and sent back the contract this week, the hotel isn't set up to take our reservations yet. Keep watching our web site (http://www.ppmp.info) and megaplex for information on reserving your rooms. We should have this information available in short order.
The Wyndham is located on the Southbank of the St. Johns River, just outside downtown Jacksonville. It is a short distance from the Museum of Science and History (MOSH) and Friendship Fountain, and the Jacksonville Landing is just across the Main Street Bridge (and also accessible via "water taxi" from the hotel). It is easily reachable from I-95 and I-10.
For those familiar with Jacksonville, this hotel was just recently re-flagged, and was formerly the Radisson Riverwalk. Wyndham is in the process of remodeling the hotel now, and expects to have this done by September, well before Megaplex.
So, why Jacksonville?
This is, I'm sure, a big question on the minds of many of our prospective members. Well, the answer isn't all that different from one of the big reasons why Anthrocon moved from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh - cost.
The hotels we talked to in Orlando wanted way more than we have paid in past years for convention space. We're talking at least two to three times more. We also looked at the Tampa area, but what the hotels there wanted was still nearly double what we've paid in the past. Along with the increased space costs, the hotels were also offering higher room rates than we've had in the past.
The Wyndham, on the other hand, came along with a very agreeable offer, with a room rate under $100 before taxes. The lower space costs will allow us to look at some additional amenities for our members, as well. I guess you could say, in keeping with this year's theme, that The Price Is Right. :)
All in all, this will allow us to put on the best convention we can, without excessive worry over if we'll be able to afford the space. We may return to Orlando someday, or maybe even have a show in Tampa in the future, but for now, Jacksonville is our new home.
You're earlier in March...
Unfortunately, we did have to schedule a little earlier in March than we would have liked; the Wyndham has other events booked for our usual mid-March dates. We hope to be back in our traditional timeframe in 2008.
If you have any questions on our new location and weekend, please feel free to respond here, or send an e-mail to <firstname.lastname@example.org>. We'll be happy to answer questions on the convention.
